In the last post I covered social network marketing and how it works. In this issue we are going to talk about the importance of good ethics in social network marketing.

As we discussed in the last issue of Get Social, social networking sites offer prime opportunities for business owners to sell their wares. With this massive onset of social network marketing it is no big surprise that there is a lot of unethical behavior taking place. While the majority of business owners utilize social network marketing with only the best of intentions there will always be those that try to take advantage of and exploit consumers.

These unethical practices can not only hurt a business they can quickly destroy it. That is why it is very important when promoting products or services via social network marketing that certain basic ethical guidelines are adhered to. Let’s go over a few important rules that need to be followed.

– Respect Privacy

When using social networking marketing as a tool to promote products and services it is important to actually participate with in the community of members. This is not an open invitation for you to start contacting everyone within the community with your marketing message. This will be considered spamming and an invasion of their privacy. Not only will it have a negative impact on business it will often end up getting you banned from the network.

Social networks are very knowledgeable when it comes to spamming practices and have no problem limiting your access to the account or removing your access completely when provided with even a hint of unethical behavior.

– Be Honest and Professional

To successfully utilize social networking sites as a marketing tool it is vital that you honestly participate within the online community as a member. Becoming a member is the first step. After you have registered make sure that you take time to get involved with the online groups that are related to your area of expertise, products and services. Never misrepresent yourself or your business and treat your fellow members with respect.

– Contribute

When it comes to achieving results from social network marketing campaigns it is important that you take time to contribute to the community. You will need to publish quality content to the network. Avoid shoving your products and services down the throats of the online community. Never mislead or give incorrect information referencing your products and services.

Now let’s go over a few examples of unethical practices in social network marketing so you can avoid making critical mistakes.

A prime example of an unethical practices is leaving a blog or post within the online community while pretending to be a customer recommending your products and services. Remember, you need to be honest with the online community that you belong to. If you’re not they will find out and as I mentioned above that can destroy your business.

Don’t criticize your competitors.  Don’t point out the shortcomings of your competitors. Instead point out what makes your products and services different from the competition.

While there are no set guidelines on ethical practices when it comes to social network marketing it is very important that you educate yourself with media law and on the potential dangers of defamation as well as invading people’s privacy.

Make sure you check back for the next post in this series. I will be covering about what social network marketing can do for business.
