What is Google Places and what can it do for your Tacoma or Seattle business?

Google Places

I’m constantly surprised at how many small business owners have no idea where, how, or why their site shows up where it does in a Google search.  Many seem to think that it’s either luck or destiny.

It’s neither.  It’s planning and execution of a designed SEO campaign.

No surprise, small businesses are always searching for inexpensive ways to promote their businesses and attract new customers.  One way to do that – which is tremendously important in SEO –  is to have a Google Places page.

When local consumers search for local products and services online, businesses can show up high in the search results with a well-optimized Google Places page.  I have put companies on the first page of Google searches for their industry keywords – WITHOUT A WEBSITE!  They just had a Places page.  A well-designed, executed, and craftily planned Places page.

According to Google, one in five searches includes a “location,” which prompted them to create Google Local. In July 2010, Google Local was renamed as Google Places.

The Yellow Pages used to list categories according to their locations.  Similarly, Google Places compiles lists of local businesses that offer the services and products that consumers search for online.  They publish this list of businesses – and allow people to review, comment, and slam those businesses – but they do not notify a business owner that they now have a Places Page!

Because of their power and potential to be either tremendously positive or negative,  claiming, verifiying, and ranking your  Google Places listing is now absolutley essential to every Tacoma or Seattle small business’ local success in Google searches.
